ABSTRACT
Objective: We compare the effects of intramuscular Ketamine with Butorphanol on post operative analgesia in children (aged 6 to 15 years) undergoing tonsillectomy Setting (Place and duration of Study): Karachi Medical and Dental College and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi, from September 2003 - February 2004.
Method: A double blind study was done on eighty children aged 6 to 15 years who came for tonsillectomy in otolaryngology (ENT) department between September 2003 to February 2004. These children were randomized to receive either intramuscular butorphanol 15 microgram/kg or Ketamine 0.5 mg/kg after induction of general anaesthesia in anterolateral aspect of thigh.
Results: Pain scores 30 minutes after extubation were higher (P<0.05) in Ketamine group, but were similar there after to the butorphanol group. Mean (SD) times to recovery form anesthesia were 20.1 minutes (SD 6.5) in Ketamine group compared to 14.2 minute (SD 5.6) in butorphanol group (P <0.01) Conclusions: We conclude that Ketamine 0.5 mg/kg intra-muscular may be an alternative analgesic for children undergoing tonsillectomy but the pain control and recovery from anesthesia were faster in butorphanol group. |
