ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study was designed to clarify the relationship between serum leptin, body mass index, fasting blood glucose and white blood cell counts. Design: It was a case control study.

Subjects and Methods: One hundred and forty female subjects with different body mass indices and fasting blood sugar levels were selected from three different diabetic centers in Karachi. Fasting blood glucose was determined enzymatically while serum leptin was measured using enzyme-linked immunoassay. Total white blood cells were counted manually after acid hemolysis of blood. The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) was determined by multiplying neutrophil percentage with total leukocyte count.

Result: Serum leptin levels of obese diabetic and non-diabetic subjects were significantly higher as compared with lean diabetic patients and nondiabetic subjects (p<0.05). Leptin levels were positively correlated with total white cell count and absolute neutrophil count (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The total leukocyte and absolute neutrophil count is highly correlated with serum leptin levels which may suggest the direct role of leptin on leukocyte proliferation or indirect via decreased sensitivity at monocyte /macrophage level which in turn cause increased proliferation of leukocytes, which may be the cause of increased incidence of infections in diabetic persons.
