PROPORTION OF OSTEOPENIA AND OSTEOPOROSIS IN FEMALE
OUTPATIENTS OF ASH, CIVIL AND JPMC

ABSTRACT
Objectives: 1-To determine the occurrence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in females through BMD by T-score.
2-To assess the age group in which it is most prevalent.
3-To find out the affect of various factors modifying it.
Design: Hospital based cross sectional study.
Setting: The study was conducted in three major government hospitals of Karachi (ASH, Civil Hospital and JPMC) during April and May 2004.
Subjects: Hundred and fifty subjects participated in the study, in which there were housewives, doctors, students & teachers (above twenty years of age).
Results: There is high frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis in females.
The most affected age group for osteopenia is 26-30 yrs and the most affected age group for osteoporosis is 46-50yrs.
The significant risk factors (p-value<0.05) according to the study are menopause, surgical intervention leading to menopause, multiparity and less intake of milk and calcium supplements.
Conclusion: Increasing frequency of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia is deficiency of calcium.
