ABSTRACT
Hepatotropic viral infections include Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) and Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) etc. are quiet common. Hepatotropic viral infections include Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) and Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) is quiet prevalent in our population. HAV infection is transmitted by orofaecal route. HAV is a single stranded RNA (ssRNA) virus without envelope. The size of this virus is 27 nm and it belongs to Picornaviridiae family. There is no chronic carrier state or chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis or cancer with HAV. The HAV vaccine is available1-5. The other virus transmitted by orofaecal route is Hepatitis E Virus. HEV is also an ssRNA virus and is without envelope. The size of virus is 30-37 nm and it belongs to Calciviridiae family. HEV infection is self-limiting and without any complications. Deaths are seen with this virus in pregnant women6,7. Hepatitis B Virus is transmitted by parenteral, perinatal and through sexual practices. HBV is only DNA virus in hepatotropic viruses. HBV is a double stranded DNA (dsDNA) with a small portion of ssDNA. The size of virus is variable (42 nm) with envelope and belongs to Hepadnaviridiae family. This virus can leads to chronic carrier state in 5-10% and chronic hepatitis & cirrhosis in1-5%. There is definite association of HBV with liver cancer (Hepatocellular carcinoma) 8-15. HBV vaccine and Immunoglobulin are available. Paenteral and sexual routes transmit HCV. This virus is ssRNA, 30-60 nm in size with envelope and belongs to Flaviviridiae family. This virus can leads to chronic carrier state in 50% and chronic hepatitis & cirrhosis in 20%. It has been associated with liver cancer (Hepatocellular carcinoma). HBV and HCV are most likely cause of viral hepatitis in Pakistan. There is no vaccine available in market against HCV14-39. HDV is a defective virus needs envelope of HBV to overcome its defect. HDV is ssRNA virus, 25 nm in size with envelope and belongs to Deltaviridiae family. This virus can leads to chronic carrier state in 50% and chronic hepatitis & cirrhosis in50%37-39.
