URBANIZATION AND HEALTH ISSUES: A CALL FOR ACTION

ABSTRACT
Urbanization with more and more people living in cities will be one of the most important issues affecting global health in the 21st century. Urban settings offer more attraction for living than rural environment. It offers better employment, education, health care, and living conditions. This has led to rapid and unplanned population growth in the cities that is associated with poverty, unsafe environment and population increases exceeding service capacity putting human health at risk. More than half the world’s population currently lives in cities.1 In next twenty years, 60% population will live in the cities, rising to 70% by 2050. The pace of urbanization has outpaced the ability of governments to build essential infrastructure, particularly in the developing world. Uncontrolled urbanization leads to unplanned growth of cities leading to adverse consequences for the health of all citizens. (CONTINUED... )
