ABSTRACT
Objective: To demonstrate
the occurrence & associated factors operating in children between
6-12 years age suffering from chronic renal failure. Material
& Method: It was an analytical cross sectional study conducted
in two large centers dealing with kidney diseases in children; namely
National institute of Child Health Karachi & Sindh institute of
Urology & Transplantation, Karachi. The study was conducted from
1st May 2009 to 31stJuly 2009. Forty children with chronic renal
failure were selected on non probable purposive sampling. Results:
In Pakistan very few studies have been conducted in children with
chronic renal failure. The exact incidence & prevalence of the condition
is not known. The available data suggest that it accounts for 10-12%
of renal cases in index population. In our study the male to female
ratio was 65:35, the mean age was 9.7 years. The mean duration of
dialysis was 1.35 years. Thus it is not an uncommon condition in
our population & needs careful evaluation & management. Key
words: Chronic renal failure (CRF), dialysis, renal transplantation.
