GERIATRIC CARE: HOW TO REINVENT
AGEING FARAH ASAD MANSURI
ABSTRACT
“Good health adds life to years”
is the theme of World Health Day 2012, where life course approach
has been proposed to promote healthy ageing. It is very much evident
that the enormous increased size of older age group is becoming
a “new normal” for the world’s population and according to safe
estimations, in next five years the population of people aged 65
years will outnumber children under age of five. Though this trend
appears universal ranging from 8% elderly population half century
back to 12% now but it is imminent that low and middle income countries
will be having 80% of the world’s population of elderly in next
couple of decades. Ageing is an uninvited event for majority of
the population but ideally one must gracefully enter into older
age with maximal social interactions around him. The numerical age
should no more define old age or frailty and a sensible planning
should be done to reverse the clock. The time has come when we have
to put aside all excuses like inaccessibility to care and lack of
money for deciding how to stay fit. It is all the more important
to deliver comprehensive clinical preventive services to this population
in cost effective way....
