ABSTRACT
Objectives: This
study was designed to determine the accuracy of the Ottawa Knee Rule (OKR)
when applied to patients with acute knee injury reported at Lancashire
Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Methods: This prospective study included a convenience
sample of all patients with a blunt knee injury presenting to the
emergency department of our hospital during the study period. Standard knee radiographs
were ordered on all patients irrespective of the determination of
the rule.
Results: A total of 70 patients were enrolled in
the study. 3 fractures (6.66%) were detected out of 45 patients
who undergone X-ray and met the rule. The potential reduction in
use of radiography was estimated to be 28.6%. The OKR missed only
one fracture.
Conclusion: Ottawa knee rule is a highly sensitive
tool for detecting knee fractures and has the potential to reduce
the number of radiographs in patients with acute knee injuries.
Key words: Ottawa Knee rule.
