ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe
the results of Doppler's scan findings in patients of varicose vein
of lower limbs in ASH.
Material & Methods: It was a descriptive case series.
This study was carried out in SOPD, Surgical Unit-1 and Ultrasound
department of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital & KMDC, Karachi from July
2008 to June 2010. A total of 50 patients were included including
male and female above 20 years of age who had varicose vein of legs
on clinical examination. All these patients were treated in this
hospital during this period.
Results: It was found that 32% (16) of patients
were female and 68% (34) were male. About 42% (21) of patients had
left sided and 32% (16) had right sided varicose vein whereas 26%
(13) patients had varicose vein on both legs. Out of fifty patients
43.75% had left sided incompetence of Saphenofemoral junction, about
25% had right sided incompetence of Saphenofemoral junction while
31.25% had both sided incompetence of Saphenofemoral junction and
only 36% (18) had competent Saphenofemoral junction. Only 72% (36)
patients had incompetent communicating (perforators) veins in the
thigh. Only 33.33% of patients had incompetent left sided Saphenopopliteal
junction, 12.50% had right sided incompetent Saphenopopliteal junction
while only 15.38% patients had incompetence of Saphenopopliteal
junction on both legs.
Conclusion: Majority of the patients had incompetence
of the Saphenofemoral Junction. Duplex Ultrasonography is the gold
standard to diagnose the varicose vein of the lower limb before
surgery in our setup. Keywords: Varicose vein, Doppler's Scan.
