PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION IN CHILDREN

ABSTRACT
Objectives: 1.
To determine the frequency of hypertension in children visiting
pediatric OPD. 2. To find out the associated risk factors of hypertension
in these children.
Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study
was carried out in pediatric OPD of Abbsi Shaheed Hospital during
June to September 2011. A convenient sample of 100 children aged
5 to 12 years visiting OPD of ASH Peads department for general complaints
of fever flu , loose motion vomiting etc were interviewed and questionnaire
were filled by them or by their parents.
Results: The sample comprised of 56% male children.
The mean age was 8.39 years ± 2.3. Majority of the patients visiting
OPD complained of cough and congestion (34%). High blood pressure
was an accidental finding in 7% of these children.
Conclusion: Hypertension was fairly a common finding
in children reporting at abbasi shaheed hospital. It was more common
in children of parents suffering from hypertension. Generally the
people were found to be unaware about occurrence of hypertension
in children. Key words: Pediatric hypertension, risk factors of
