FREQUENCY OF ALLERGIC DISEASES AMONG MEDICAL
STUDENTS OF DOW MEDICAL COLLEGE

ABSTRACT
Objective: To find
the frequency and type and severity of allergic diseases among medical
students. To describe the effect of Allergy on student's health&
life and the medication taken for relief of their condition.
Methodology: This was cross-sectional, descriptive
study conducted in Dow Medical College, DUHS, during the period
of August-November 2011. 500 questionnaires were distributed through
convenient sampling method. Questionnaire was thoroughly explained
to the participants before proceeding and was self-administered.
Data was collected and then analyzed using statistical package for
social sciences program (SPSS) version 16. Results Response rate
was 76%, survey showed that 223( 58.51%) students had allergic diseases,
the most common was Allergic Rhinitis, 167(43.95%). Students had
positive family history of allergy in 97(59.34%). Among these students
111(61%) thought that the locality of university was causing or
worsening it; allergy caused concentration and learning power impairment
in 103 (56.6%). Students received self-medication to relieve allergic
symptoms was 110(44.2%), 64(35%)did not take any medication and
39(21.8%) took medicine as prescribed by doctor.
Conclusion: Study found that the most common allergic
disease was allergic rhinitis. It is evident from research results
that students were affected adversely due to prevailing allergic
conditions . To relieve allergic symptoms 43.2% students did self-medication.
