ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine
frequency of low APGAR score in newborns with abnormal cardiotocography
(CTG).
Materials & Methods: The study was a cross-sectional
study conducted at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Abbasi
Shaheed Hospital from March 2009 to September 2009. 120 patients
were selected through emergency department with abnormal CTG trace
at term, whether booked or nonbooked. After delivery of the baby
APGAR score was assessed at 1 minute. APGAR score < 7 was labeled
as low APGAR score. Mode of delivery was noted.
Result: Of 120 newborn babies with abnormal CTG,
79 (65.8%) had low APGAR score. Majority of the women 94 (78.9%)
underwent cesarean section, 17 (13.8%) had instrumental assisted
delivery and only 9 (7.3%) had spontaneous vaginal delivery. Out
of 94 women who underwent cesarean section, 62 (66%) had newborn
with low APGAR score. Out of 17 women who had instrumental assisted
delivery, 11 (64.7%) had newborn with low APGAR score. Out of 9
women who had spontaneous vaginal delivery, 6 (66.7%) had newborn
with low APGAR score.
Conclusion: Low APGAR score of newborns with abnormal
CTG is a predictor of fetus not being-well and needs intensive care.
In this way, perinatal morbidity and mortality may be reduced by
in time treatment by pediatrician.
Key Words: Cardiotocography, Apgar score, fetal
heart rate, fetal monitoring, fetal hypoxia.
