DEVELOPMENT OF DEPRESSION
AND ANXIETY IN PATIENTS WITH BREAST DISEASES GHAZALA

ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess
how frequently the development of anxiety and depression are associated
with breast disorders.
Material and Methods: It was a Cross sectional
surveycaried out in Breast Clinic of Abbassi Shaheed Hospital from
January to December 2009. All patients who had visited to Breast
Clinic having breast related problems were identified and selected.
In addition to detailed history and examination of their disease,
they were advised to fill the comprehensive standard DASS21 questionnaire
assessing signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression at first
visit. The questionnaire incorporated two subsets of questions;
one set (7-questions) represented depressive illness while another
set (7-questions) represented anxiety disorders. Each of these negative
emotional symptom is rated on a four point Likert Scale . Patients
who had co-morbids and previous psychiatric illness were excluded
from the study.
Result: A total of 200 patients were recruited
with mean + SD age of 35.03 + 16.71 years. Majority (79.5%) had
suffered from benign breast disorders. All women experienced both
anxiety and depressive states in this study. The reduced energy
(61.5%), depressed mood (61.5%) and sleep problems (57.5%) were
frequently encountered features. Impaired thinking and anguished
facial expression were presented in 35% and 27.5% of patients respectively.
Conclusion: The anxiety and depression are frequently
occurring in patients having breast disorders.
