NSAIDS IN THE ETIOLOGY OF 1.5 BILLION HYPERTENSIVE
PATIENTS OVER NEXT DECADE
MUHAMMAD TARIQ AFTAB
ABSTRACT
Hypertension will be the most important
public health disaster in near future. The number of adults with
hypertension in 2025 will be 1.56 billion1 in a ratio of 1:2 in
economically developed and developing countries. Life style factors
will occupy the major portion in the etiology of this worse situation
but the medications which are readily available over the counter
and a large proportion of the adult population is using them, will
contribute in it to a significant extent. Drug-induced hypertension
2,3 is the most common resistant hypertension and is frequently
encountered in every day clinical practice. Unfortunately primary
care physicians frequently miss the opportunity to detect and appropriately
manage this iatrogenic form of secondary hypertension. Among the
culprit drugs, the main bulk contains Non steroidal anti inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDS)4 which are in both prescription and over the counter
medications. NSAID induced hypertension is highly prevalent in elderly
patients because polypharmacy is common among these patients and
they usually use NSAIDS either as a part of their prescription or
get them as over the counter medicines to treat co morbidities associated
with chronic diseases.....
